Edward Mirzabegian, Chief Executive Officer

With more than 20 years of healthcare and hospital operations experience, Edward Mirzabegian came to AVH as Chief Operating Officer in July 2005. In June of 2007 the Board of Directors appointed him as Chief Executive Officer. Mirzabegian is an innovative leader committed to developing and implementing strategic plans that identify and promote best practices, cultivate hospital staff and physician partnerships, and improve operational and financial performance to ensure the success of Antelope Valley Hospital’s current and long range objectives.

As Chief Executive Officer, Mirzabegian is responsible for operational effectiveness, strategic planning, business development, medical staff relations, financial management, and facility expansion plans. His expertise in system operations, hospital management and strategic planning will help facilitate expansion plans, significantly improve patient and employee satisfaction scores, and enable physicians and hospital staff to maximize their skills and deliver world class health care to you and your family with compassion and respect.

Before joining AVH, Mirzabegian was the Chief Operating Officer for Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas, where he planned and implemented many successful clinical and organizational programs for St. Mary's Hospital, including plan, design, and implementation of construction of a 220- bed replacement hospital.

Mirzabegian also held many other positions during his career including Vice President of Clinical Services at Bromenn Healthcare, Bloomington, IL; Vice President of Operations at Centegra Health System, McHenry, IL, which included two hospitals and 24 clinics and ambulatory care centers, Vice President of Patient Services at Memorial Medical Center in suburban Chicago and Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.

Mirzabegian has a M.S., M.H.A. in Health Service Administration from University of St. Francis in Illinois. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science from University of Illinois.

Michelle Nowicki, Vice President, Nursing

Michelle Nowicki, Vice President, Nursing

Michelle Nowicki brings more than 26 years of nursing experience to her position as Vice President of Nursing. She came to Antelope Valley Hospital in 1991 as a staff and then charge nurse for the Critical Care Unit. Nowicki was then named House Supervisor in 2005 and Director of Critical Care Services in 2006. In August 2007, she was promoted to Vice President of Nursing.

As Vice President of Nursing, Nowicki's experience in strategic business planning will help facilitate the development of new programs and services at Antelope Valley Hospital.

Before joining AVH, Nowicki worked for Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, McKenzie Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon and Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills California.

Nowicki received her Associates Degree in Nursing from the University of Albuquerque in 1980. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a Public Health Certification in 2002 from California State University and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Nursing Administration with Certification in Quality Improvement in 2006.

Humberto Quintanar, Chief Information Officer

Humberto Quintanar, Chief Information Officer

Humberto Quintanar is a Senior Level IT Executive with over 24 years of experience. He has developed a broad and diverse knowledge base and across several industries, including technology, healthcare, public utilities, petroleum, communications, banking, travel, manufacturing and entertainment.

Quintanar served as CIO in a major manufacturing and importing environment and at a software development company with multi-national locations. He has also held senior management-level positions in two of the "Big Five" consulting groups, at a major software development firm, at IBM, and most recently at Washington Mutual, where he was a senior level vice president in charge of the technology solutions group's vendor management.

Quintanar has experience in the development of enterprise business strategy, the implementation of enterprise change management and in business processes reengineering. His record includes steering companies through merge integration while taking a leadership roll in technology development, implementation and rollout.

Quintanar is bi-lingual and fluent in Spanish. He has taught courses at UCLA in of project management. He has a master's degree in information systems, a BS in computer science and a BS in accounting. He also holds various certifications including IBM Certified Executive Program Manager and PMI Certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

John Sullivan, Vice President, Human Resources

John Sullivan, Vice President, Human Resources

John came to us in August of 2002 from Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) Southern California Division in Bakersfield, California. This included five healthcare facilities where about 50% of employees were represented by unions.

John's healthcare experience includes executive level HR positions with the Providence Health System (Washington State), Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System (central Illinois) and Daughters of Charity Health System (Milwaukee, Wis.). His experience has focused on creative solutions to employee/labor relations issues; effectiveness training at all levels of an organization and successful recruitment and retention of highly qualified staff.

John has a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and has graduate studies in Human Tests and Measurements. This is basically the study of intelligence testing, personality inventories, and achievement and vocational testing.

Troy A. Schell, General Counsel, Legal and Business Affairs

Troy A. Schell, General Counsel, Legal and Business Affairs

Troy A. Schell joined the AVH in 2007 as the hospital's first in-house counsel. Schell brings with him a background in insurance, medical malpractice and related civil litigation defense actions. In addition, his past experience includes representing numerous physicians in administrative actions with the California Medical Board and Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

Schell is currently a member of the Orange County Bar Association and Western San Bernardino County Bar Association. Schell received his B.A. degree from the University of Arizona in 1997, where he majored in Political Science and History. Subsequently, he graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2000. He was admitted to the California Bar in 2000.

Before coming to AVH, Schell worked for the firm of Davis, Grass, Goldstein & Housouer. From 1998-2001, Schell worked for the law firm of Cooksey, Toolen, Gage, Duffy & Woog as an associate attorney with an emphasis on insurance defense.

Bonnie Daniel, Vice President, Women and Infants Pavilion Operations

Bonnie Daniel began working for Antelope Valley Hospital in 1984 as a staff nurse in the Critical Care Unit. She became an Assistant Director there in 1986 and became the Performance Improvement Coordinator in 1994. In 1997, Daniel became the Assistant Vice President of Nursing Practice and assumed the role of Vice President of Nursing in 1999. In 2007, she accepted the position of Vice President of Women and Infants Pavilion Operations. Daniel also worked at Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo and Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Daniel received a Diploma in Nursing from Marcy School of Nursing in New York in 1969 and an Associate Degree in Science from Antelope Valley College in 1988. In 1990, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a Public Health Certificate from Cal State Dominguez Hills and in 1995 she received a Master of Science in Nursing with an Administration/QI Certificate.
