Sibling Class

Having a new brother or sister is an exciting event in the life of a child. While it is exciting, it can be a time of anxiety, and most children will have many questions.

The Obstetrical Unit of Antelope Valley Hospital invites all children over the age of two years to attend the Big Brother/Sister class.

Hour long classes are held on a monthly basis for children ages 2 and older. There is no charge for the class. An adult must accompany the child(ren) and reservations must be made in advance.

To make reservations for your older children's visit to the hospital to see where his/her mother and baby will be, call the Family Resource Center at (661) 726-6216.

Prepared Childbirth Education

This four-week series for mothers and their support persons meets once weekly for two and half hours. Topics, which are covered, are physical and emotional changes, the role of the labor coach, techniques for relaxation and breathing, variations in labor and delivery, cesarean births and pain relief options. An obstetrical orientation is also offered during the series.

We suggest that early in your pregnancy you make reservations for the series you wish to attend, as they tend to fill rapidly. Plan to begin the classes in your seventh month of pregnancy.

To make reservations call the Family Resource Center at (661) 726-6216.

Welcome Home Baby

This class prepares first-time parents for the challenges ahead. You will get hands on experience in bathing, diapering, and feeding techniques. You will also learn what is normal newborn behavior and other aspects of normal newborn care.

Breastfeeding for the expectant parent

A certified lactation educator will teach you the ABCs of breastfeeding. This class will discuss all your questions on breastfeeding from initiation to problem solving. The class will also cover the transition back to work. Fathers are encouraged to attend.
