Safeguarding Your Prostate Health

With prostate cancer being the most common cancer that affects men specifically, it is essential to make the necessary lifestyle changes for proper prevention. In light of National Prostate Health Month (NPHM), the health experts at Antelope Valley Hospital are here to share some tips to help men to protect their prostate health.

Maintain a Healthy Body Weight

Studies have found that being overweight or obese leaves men at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and are at an increased risk of their cancer being aggressive or even fatal. One of the best ways you can promote a healthy body weight is to lead a physically active lifestyle.

Eat a Balanced Diet

When it comes to supporting your general health and wellness and preventing the development of most forms of cancer, it is important to eat a nutrient-dense diet. Some tips to help you build a balanced diet include:

  • Cut back on red meat.
  • Eat less full-fat dairy products.
  • Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Cut back on fast foods and processed foods.
  • Eat whole grains.
  • Cut out sugary sodas and juices.

Get Regular Screenings

Like most forms of cancer, early detection is important for the effectiveness of treatment for prostate cancer. For men of average risk of developing prostate cancer, it is advised that you get a digital rectal exam (DRE) every two years, starting at the age of 50.

If you have other factors that may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer, your doctor may advise that you begin screenings earlier.
