June is Men’s Health Month

  • Posted On:

If you’re an adult male and haven’t seen a doctor in the past 12 months, it’s time to schedule a physical exam. Many health conditions, such as heart disease, can be detected early and treated. So even if you feel fine, it’s important to see your doctor regularly.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Fortunately, high-quality, nationally accredited heart care can be found right here in the Antelope Valley. The Institute for Heart & Vascular Care (IHVC) at Antelope Valley Medical Center offers complete care for the detection, prevention and treatment of heart and vascular conditions.

As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, AVMC has demonstrated a commitment to providing the most advanced and effective response, treatment and care to patients experiencing chest pain. Chest pain can be the sign of a serious problem that requires immediate attention, so if you’re having chest pain don’t ignore it. AVMC is also a STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) Receiving Center, which means that the hospital and its clinical staff have the training, equipment and processes in place to immediately treat patients experiencing a heart attack.

The two cardiac catheterization labs at AVMC feature the most advanced technology in the Antelope Valley. Cardiac catheterization is a big name for a procedure that involves inserting a tiny tube (called a catheter) into an artery or vein that leads to your heart. The catheter, which is about as thick as a toothpick, is inserted near your groin, neck or arm and guided through the blood vessel to the heart with the help of x-ray images. With the catheter in place, physicians can examine how well your heart is working and diagnose any problems that may exist.

Heart attacks can come on suddenly and intensely, but did you know that a heart attack can also start slowly with just mild pain or discomfort? The early signs are often dismissed because people don’t realize what is happening to them. Call 9-1-1 if you experience any of these symptoms: chest pain, discomfort in other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Even if you’re not sure, have it checked out. Fast treatment can make a lifesaving difference.
