  • Posted On:

Aya Smith, RN, has been named new chief nursing officer and Paul Butler new chief information officer at Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC), effective immediately.

Smith is a longtime member of the Lancaster healthcare community, who first worked at AVMC from 2007-14 and then rejoined the hospital last June as house supervisor. Since December she has been serving as interim CNO. “Aya continues to display the personal attributes and technical knowledge that make her promotion so natural,” said hospital President and CEO Michael Wall. “I know she will be a wonderful addition to our executive management team and to the overall quality and patient-first focus of our hospital.”

Here in Lancaster Smith has also worked for Kaiser Permanente (first as a staff educator and later as a nursing department administrator) and also as a nursing clinical instructor at Antelope Valley College. She holds both a Master of Science in nursing & nursing education as well as a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Phoenix.

Butler comes to AVMC with more than two decades of experience in healthcare and information technology and has worked with many of the nation’s largest and best known healthcare organizations, including Amgen, HealthNet, Kaiser, Wellpoint and Martin Luther King Community Hospital in Los Angeles. For the past eight years, he has been director of Top Tier Consulting, a premier healthcare management consulting firm based in Los Angeles. Butler holds a Bachelor of Art in communications from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management

“Paul has a deep and respected background in all aspects of healthcare IT from electronic medical records implementation to software program management to the development of an effective IT infrastructure,” said Wall. “With technology changing so fast and playing an increasingly important role in healthcare, Paul’s experience will be vital to helping AVMC prepare for the future while serving the present needs of patients, employees and physicians.”
