Preventing Summer Tragedy with Lifesaving Skills

  • Posted On:

(LANCASTER, CA – June 27, 2023) – Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) and the Antelope Valley YMCA have joined forces to promote the importance of pool safety and to provide lifesaving skills that can potentially prevent a tragedy.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), drowning is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of one and four, with most instances happening in residential swimming pools. With summer now upon us, it is crucial to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of water safety in order to prevent such incidents from occurring. As a Level II Trauma Center, we see the unfortunate results of drownings, which in most cases could have been preventable.

Although, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends swimming lessons for children as early as 12 months old, the Antelope Valley YMCA provides swimming lessons for infants as young as 3 months old.

At AVMC, we are committed to promoting safety and well-being in our community, and we believe that this partnership with the YMCA is a significant step towards achieving this goal. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the information presented and help us spread awareness about pool safety to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Antelope Valley Medical Center will provide a live CPR demonstration, and the YMCA will provide pool safety instruction. Media is invited to interview participants.
